No I'm NOT Joining the Circus

Here is a picture of my new folding bike. It looks tiny, and it is smaller than a regular bike, but it rides nice and has 6 speeds to boot. It will be great this Summer.

I have a dental appointment at noon and then Jack and I are just spending the evening at home.

Going to Seattle!!

I made reservations to fly to Seattle on March 10. I'll work around my work schedule and fly back on Sunday the 14th. Everyone who wants to take me out to dinner send me an email now..ha ha Actually I miss Madison and Katie a whole bunch... and want to visit friends and family I was not able to see earlier in the month.

Yes You Can Get a Free Lunch!

Jack and I decided against golfing yesterday (cool and cloudy) and went to the Spotlight 29 Casino instead. Alaska Airlines had a special deal where you bring your boarding pass into the casino and get $50 toward free play or food. As it turned out, they added $30 to our players cards, $10 toward gaming tables and $10 for food. We DID get a free lunch at the buffet...did okay on the slots too.

Happy Boxing Day

The name derives from the tradition of giving seasonal gifts, on the day after Christmas, to less wealthy people and social inferiors, which was later extended to various workpeople such as labourers and servants.

We had a great Christmas dinner with Gary ,Suzie and Phoebe last night. I totally forgot about taking pictures so here's a picture of Charlie Brown's Christmas Tree.

Jack and I may play 9 later today at Santa Rosa. The sun is out but it is a chilly 48 degrees.

The bird who eats my flowers just landed on the bird bath outside the bedroom door. I'll give him a break today as long as he leaves the Sunflowers alone.

PS I called Madison yesterday morning and they were just opening gifts. She said Santa had already given her CHOCOLATE! and HELLO KITTY walkie talkies!!!

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas from the desert where it is 48 degrees this morning!I have my pink furry nightgown on and Jack is in sweats cooking a Prime Rib for dinner tonight. Gary and Suzie L. are coming over (with Phoebe of course!) to share our Christmas dinner.

Jack and I decided in November that our Mexico cruise would be our Christmas gift but he surprised me this morning with a picture of a folding bike he ordered for me. (I sold my full size bike at the garage sale) I wanted to replace it with a smaller folding bike that we could carry easily in the 5th wheel. I'm excited! Can't wait to try it out.

As soon as I think Madison is up and finished with her gift opening I am calling her. What can be more fun than a 5 year old on Christmas morning??!!!

Sand Storm

Yesterday was the windiest day I have experienced here. The sand was blowing so hard last night I could not see across the street.A coyote ran out from the side of the road and fortunately I missed it. I'm glad I don't have a long commute in the dark.

New Job Today and First Day of Winter

Started my new job this morning at the storage facility 1.9 miles down the road. This is the shortest commute I've ever had. Based upon what I did today it should be a pretty decent job. Three days a week for a total of 24 hours. I like the two people I'll work with (the manager and the kid that handles the U-Haul rentals and drives the golf car around the facility) and it does require some thinking, cash handling and computer work. It pays about 2 dollars an hour more than most jobs I've seen down here.

I'm still looking for that perfect "work from home/telecommute" position...Randy, I'll always remember your comment about how great it is to "commute" to work in your P.J's every day and walk across the hall to your computer. Suggestions welcome. (I mean job suggestions not styles of my jammy pants)

Weather down here is kind of cool and overcast...60's... Happy First Day of Winter..glad we're not on the East Coast

50 Years

I love these dressed up Kitty's

Jack and I worked a security job last night at a 50th wedding anniversary party. The place was packed...estimates of 200 or more people. It was held in a building inside the Indio Fairgrounds. The guys patrolled the parking lot and I was assigned the hallways near the womens bathrooms..I guess to prevent grafitti? Personally I think we were there to keep the attendees from storming the stage and killing the awful band. It was Hispanic music but sounded a lot like cats screaming in Spanish toward the end of the evening. The couple celebrating their 50th... still dancing at midnight!

(A side note here..my folks made it to their 50th in 2000..an awesome accomplishment I think )

Busy Thursday

While I was at work today Jack put up the Christmas Tree, baked a blackberry pie, and prepped lobster for our dinner!

It is 72 degrees and sunny... that just doesnt feel Christmas-y..The Mall was pretty crowded with people doing their shopping before the weekend.

Jack and I are playing golf tomorrow if the weather is good..

Two of my Favorite Pictures

Seattle I Don't Love You Anymore

Palm Spring 68°F
Mostly Sunny

Seattle 49.0 °F
Rain

Just kidding. I love Seattle in the Summer.

Went to the dentist this morning and he and his wife are considering moving to Seattle to start a practice (she is a dental anesthesiologist) He said the regulations and laws down here are driving them out.

Start my new job on Monday and only six more days at my current employer,(who must remain nameless in this blog) and the season will be over.

Wish we could have seen more of you during our visit to Seattle. If I can get a good airfare I may fly up this Spring for a long weekend.

Home Again (Tuesday)

Our flight left Seattle around 9:30AM and we ran into some friends (Bill, retired firefighter, and MaryJane Donahoe) who were on the same flight headed toward Yuma. Arrived back in Palm Springs to 65 degree weather...nice

Maddy's 5th Birthday Party

Even Great Grandma Marilyn played air hockey with Madison! Bumper cars, pizza, go carts (Jack went outside this year and braved the cold on the go cart track).

Colombi Christmas Party

The Christmas Party Saturday night was well attended and everyone had fun. So much food! Gary even wore a tie! Here is also a picture of Mary opening a special gift from Jack (a sandwich) long story that involves a golf game in Palm Springs a few years ago.

No snow this year but it was cold. Gary has a propane heater on his lower patio so the poker players stayed somewhat warm.

Seems like this entire trip to Seattle was one busy day after another. Sunday was Madison's birthday party......

Brrrrr

We made it here (to Washington) on Thursday afternoon. It is cold...20's but no snow (yet).

I had a nice visit with Katie,Derek and Madison yesterday and we went to our favorite lunch spot Red Robin.Did some shopping afterwards and I got to see their Christmas tree and house decorations. Some of them date back to when Katie was a baby and brought back memories of her tiny hands grabbing at ornaments on the tree.

Madison surprised me with pierced ears!! She said she didnt even cry. Some bad news however...she is not allowed to watch any movies or cartoons FOR A YEAR (she said) because she lied about cleaning her room. Actually Katie told me the restriction is only a week...probably seems like a year to Maddy. Pictures later...

Alaska Airlines

We printed our boarding passes today and found out Alaska charges $15 for the first checked bag and $25 for every one after that! You know that means people will have these humongous carry-ons and try to stuff them in the overheads!

Should arrive in Seattle tomorrow afternoon! Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Desert Winter Wear

Believe it or not I see many young girls at the Mall wearing mini skirts and arctic boots. Geez it's only 60 outside not 60 below.

Record Rainfall

According to the National Weather Service, 1.12 inches of rain was recorded at the Palm Springs International Airport as of 8 p.m., surpassing the previous 1992 record of 0.90 inches on the same day.

The rain let up last night but it was very windy. Sunny and 55 this morning. Jack and I were grateful that the weather was good on Sunday for the golf tourney. No way anyone would have played yesterday.

We're looking forward to sunshine and 35 in Seattle :( I'll take ANYTHING but ice and snow!!

"Rain floods roads, causes power outages"

Headlines from the Desert Sun newspaper. Palm Springs airport measured .84 inches of rain today by 4:30 PM. I worked all day and had no problems getting to and from however I drove like an old lady!! First time I've worn a waterproof jacket down here in 3 years and a true Northwest Native never carries an umbrella.

We leave for Seattle on Thursday! I hope it warms up a little so there is no ice or snow.

Here is what Jeff Foxworthy has to say about Washington:

If someone in a Home Depot store offers you assistance and they don't work there, you live in Washington.

If you've worn shorts, sandals and a parka at the same time, you live in Washington.

If you've had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed the wrong number, you live in Washington.

If you measure distance in hours, you live in Washington.

If you know several people who have hit a deer more than once, you live in Washington.

If you have switched from 'heat' to 'A/C' and back again in the same day, you live in
Washington.

If you can drive 75 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard without flinching, you live in Central, Southern or Eastern Washington.

If you design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a 2 layers of clothes or under a raincoat, you live in Washington.

If driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow and ice, you live
in Washington.

If you know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter, and road construction, you live in Washington.

If you feel guilty throwing aluminum cans or paper in the trash, you live in Washington.

If you know more than 10 ways to order coffee, you live in Washington.

If you know more people who own boats than air conditioners, you live in Washington.

If you stand on a deserted corner in the rain
waiting for the "Walk" signal, you live in Washington.

Golf Tourney Part 2

We had a great time playing in the couples golf tournament this morning with Tom and Terry C. Toward the end Terry and I pretended we were playing for a million dollars a shot and that seemed to help for awhile. It started out kind of chilly and we were bundled up in layers and gloves etc. Finally warmed up after a few holes. Jack and I took 4th place! Not sure how that happened as I played my usual bad game so it must have been Jack's scores that saved us. Santa Rosa had a nice lunch ready for us afterwards. The temperature still hasn't hit 70 yet today so it's a good day to stay inside and watch football. Too bad the Hawks/49's game isnt being televised down here.

Golf Tourney Sunday

Jack and I will be playing in a couples golf tournament tomorrow morning at Santa Rosa. I work until 10:30 tonight so I will need to sleep fast for an 8AM start time Sunday.

Weather here this morning is only about 58 degrees.Cool and overcast. KOMO news shows Seattle is in the 30's!. We'll be there this time next week!

New Job

Looks like I will be the new Assistant Manager of a storage facility about 1/2 mile down the road. Part time 24 hours a week..Monday Tues and Wed. Still about $12 LESS an hour than I made in WA but that is just the way it goes down here. Add that to my casino winnings and I'm rolling in dough!!

Happy 5th Birthday Madison!!

5 Years ago I got a call from my daughter saying she was in labor and I needed to be on my way. I left work in Bellevue, went home to Kirkland to pack a bag and headed east on 1-90 in the dark to make the 5 plus hour trip to Pullman. I ran into ice fog in Ellensburg and crawled along the shoulder of the road for 25 miles. Visibility was ZERO. After I crossed the Columbia River in Vantage the fog melted off my windshield and it began snowing. It took me 7 hours to get to Pullman. It was a nightmare trip but I made it to the hospital to watch my first grandchild being born!

I love you Madison!

Mixed Feelings

I've tried to keep this blog upbeat and positive. The recent slaying of the 4 police officers in Tacoma and this article in the Times today reminds me of when Alan died (for those of you who do not know,I was widowed at age 30 when Katie was 4 months old,Alan died in a motorcycle accident). My neighbors, family and friends were all so supportive. I don't now what I would have done without that support. (Especially you Denise XXX) I am sure the families of those officers are still numb with grief. On the other hand, I am happy that the slimeball who killed them was taken down yesterday by a Seattle police officer.

Officers, neighbors keep watch over fallen officer's family
By Lynda V. Mapes

Seattle Times staff reporter

GRAHAM, Pierce County — It's the little things that matter most right now, small kindnesses to help fill a void.

In the days since Gregory Richards, 42, was gunned down in a local coffee shop, officers from the Kent Police Department, where Richards began his law-enforcement career, have been outside his house in a patrol car. They work six-hour shifts on their own time, around the clock, so that his widow and three kids won't feel alone.

"It is a constant vigil," said Melanie Burwell, Richards' sister-in-law. "It's that sense of support, a salute to Greg. It lifts her that tiny bit," she said of Kelly, Richards' widow.

Volunteers from the local fire department in Graham turned out Tuesday, with some 15 firefighters and their spouses spending the day decorating the Richards' home for Christmas. They were up on the roof, putting up lights. Tying velvet bows on the garage, and on the front porch. Raising a Christmas tree on the front lawn.

A firefighter brought a second tree for the house, poking fresh and green out of his red pickup.

Neighbors arrived all the while in a steady stream up the front walk, bringing cards that were filling a basket with condolences. A steadily growing collection of flower arrangements, with pictures of Richards tucked amid the blooms, was taking shape as a memorial display on the front lawn.

A neighborhood restaurant sent enough food for a banquet. New pet beds were even given for the family dogs.

As night fell and the moon sailed full and bright in the sky, the Christmas lights glowed — and the guys from Graham Fire and Rescue arrived in the ladder truck — just for the kids, to give them a spin around the neighborhood to lift their spirits. The truck, all lights and siren and shining red paint, brightened what might otherwise have been a too-quiet night.

More neighbors stopped by as they came home from work, gathering in the yard to share stories, hugs and support.

A sign by the side of the road reminds the family every time they come and go: "To the Richards Family As a Community Neighbors and Friends our Hearts and Prayers are With You." The American flag at the entrance to the development flies at half-staff; Dwayne Good, head of the neighborhood association, saw to that as soon as he heard the news Sunday.

Like others here, Good felt not only grief and shock, but a sense of being robbed. The Richards family had moved here recently, just over a year ago. But they had worked hard at becoming part of the community.

This neighborhood is cul-de-sac America, with perfect lawns, and people who take pride and pleasure in taking care of them — and each other.

"He was someone you could count on to help with anything," Good said. remembering Richards and his wife arriving to help shovel yard after yard of beauty bark to neaten the development's common grounds.

Next-door neighbor John Brewer enjoyed sending his kids over to wear themselves out on the Richardses' trampoline.

"He was starting to be a pretty good friend," Brewer said. "We'd stand on the street talking, enjoying the weather, watching Mount Rainier change from orange to blue to black — he was just an asset to the neighborhood.

"He was someone people would go to for advice; he has three kids, he's a police officer, he had seen a lot of life. I thought, when my kids are in junior high, I'll be talking to him and my dad. You realize just how much was taken from the family, the friends, the community. It's one more voice we won't have to turn to."

Richards had so many projects: A gazebo in the back yard. Tearing out grass, and putting in a concrete parking area for his police cruiser. "He just finished that," said neighbor Stu Wheeler, who enjoyed sharing with Richards about the best grass seed for the lawn, how to get rid of all the stones in their rocky soil at the local gravel pit for free — the day-to-day things neighbors talk about.

Wheeler was putting Christmas lights on his house Sunday when he heard the news. By Tuesday, he said he still hadn't been able to bring himself to light them. "It just didn't feel right."

Long after next Tuesday's memorial service has come and gone, the people here will still be there for the family, said neighbor Cary Bertram as he watched the ladder truck take the kids around the cul-de-sac.

"This neighborhood has turned out," Bertram said. "And as long as they are living here, our eyes will be on that home."

Happy Hour

Jack and I just had a nice happy hour with neighbors, and fellow RV'ers Dan and Terry W. It's nice to exchange ideas and info about camping spots we've been to and enjoyed. They will be taking our spot at Spectacle Lake this year in July. We will be spending 10 days at Fort Flagler when crabbing season opens.

Jack and I are sitting outside watching the moon and one star through a fairly cloudy sky. There was snow up on the top of the tram a few days ago (when it rained down here) It's weird, but very pretty, to be in the desert and look up at snow on the nearby hillside.

What is 60 Degrees?

60 degrees in Seattle is a bike ride, a picnic, a shirtsleeve work in the garden day,top down on the convertible (with the windows up of course).

60 degrees in the desert....we lit the furnace this morning.

I Hate This Bird!

Every day I chase this bird away from my Lantana and Sunflowers. It rips up flowers..doesnt eat them...just rips them to shreds! It hangs out in the neighbors orange tree with it's pals. Jack and I call them "Juicy Birds" because we think they'd make a great meal for a Hawk!

I've been closing the store for the past three nights. Getting home around 10:30 or 11 PM,which is late for me. On Dec 21,22nd and 23rd the Mall stays open until 11PM! After Black Friday the Mall traffic dropped considerably and it has been rather slow. We are hoping there will be another shopping surge before Christmas when people rush out for those last minute gifts.

Leaving for Seattle on December 10.I'm looking forward to the days off and catching up with some friends and family during our visit.(Especially Madison!)

This Makes Me Sick

I am shocked and saddened by the headline I just read in the Seattle Times:

4 police officers shot, killed in ambush near Tacoma WA

All I can say is that I am glad my son-in-law did not get hired by the Tacoma Police Dept this year

Rainstorm Continued...

It actually did rain quite a bit here (for the desert) enough to use my wipers and utilize my sloooowwww WA driving habits. It smells so good on the pavement. The sun is coming out now and even though it is only 64 degrees I will probably head to the pool in an hour or so.

Desert Rainstorm!

Jack and I are sitting on the patio reading the paper and having our morning coffee. He felt a few drops of rain. We got so excited as we watched a few pathetic little splats fall on the ground and stop. I'll head to the bank as soon as the CHP clears away all the wrecks as a result of this rainstorm. Ha ha Washingtonians laugh at this "rain".

Yesterday I did a non scientific poll of people who shopped on Black Friday (at the Westfield Mall) The best buys apparently were at Best Buys with ToysRUS second.Hispanic families came out the earliest at 5AM and the Canadians showed up around noon. Teenagers who don't really buy anything but hang out showed up around 3PM

12 days until we head to Seattle!

Thanksgiving in the Desert

Swimming in the morning and bar-b-que turkey in the afternoon!(Yes, Jack snorkels in the pool. He actually saw a goldfish once.)

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner with Gary and Suzie L.Great weather and I think this is our third year at their house. It is getting to be quite a tradition now! The turkey was perfect and was stuffed with oranges, lemons and garlic..moist and tasty. Plenty of leftovers and Phoebe (sometimes known as "feed me") supervised my transfer of turkey to the zip lock just in case any dropped to the floor.

Tomorrow on Black Friday I don't work until noon, however Macy's and Penneys open at 4AM.

Baseboard Day

Tom came over this morning and installed baseboard around our new carpet. Obviously not his first rodeo. He did a great job, quick and clean! Jack is masking the walls so he can paint the baseboard tomorrow after the caulk dries.

I had some new passport photos taken (horrible,I'll be lucky if they let me out of the country with these) so I can renew my passport by mail. I got all excited when I saw you can now order a passport card for $20 instead of the passport book for $75 until I read the fine print that the card won't get you into Mexico or Canada...figures.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Golf Today

Here is Jack teeing off on 15 at Santa Rosa Country Club. I have not played since September and it showed. I need some practice or lessons or?? Anyway I'm not too motivated to go to the driving range after being on my feet all day. It was a beautiful day however and fun to get out on the golf course.

It's Getting Cold!

Palm Springs Forecast for Wednesday!!!!

76°F | 49° Sweatshirt Weather

Jack had a fantastic dinner waiting for me after work...Pork loin, seasoned green beans, yams and wine. He's getting ready to put new baseboard around the living room and dining room.

Tomorrow we're golfing at Santa Rosa if it doesnt rain.. LOL not gonna happen :)

We made our daily $$ goal plus some at work today and I bought some goodies with my discount.

Thanksgiving Thursday!

I recieved a 40th reunion card from Shorecrest High school ( in the burbs north of Seattle) for next Summer. Like one fellow graduate said in the Shorecrest Reunion Newsletter.." Who are these old people using our names??"

Poolside on the Ship

The Radiance of the Sea has two huge pools. One outdoors and one inside a Solarium. We mainly lounged around the one inside the Solarium figuring we get enough sun at home. The picture above of Jack is on the tender boat returning to the ship from Cabo.

Onboard Casino

Okay you know darn well we went to the Casino. Actually we both did quite well. The machines pay off in quarters. It really screwed up my manicure having to dig quarters out of those machines..but well worth it.

3 Ships in Cabo

There were three cruise ships docked in Cabo on Thursday. Jack and I went into a huge market near the pier and did some shopping. I like Cabo. It has a beautiful harbor full of yachts, fishing boats, jet skis etc...lots of activity. One cool thing we saw was a firefighter spray painted gold and standing like a statue in the square. Jack saw him move and we went over to talk to him and take a picture. He was raising funds for the Cabo San Lucas fire dept.

We didn't venture too far into the city itself. A few years ago on our cruise to Mexico we went on a timeshare tour (for the free liquor package) and saw a new development with million dollar condos overlooking the bay. I'd like to go back sometime and spend a few days exploring the city.

Home Again

Too tired to blog now but here are some pix of the ship. I'll add more later as well as some of Cabo etc.

At Sea

Hola: We spent the morning in Ensenada yesterday and it is a fairly yucky town. Back on board ship and headed to Cabo tomorrow. At sea today, beautiful weather and lotsa luck in the casino. Jack got his picture on the "Wall of Fame"...more on that later. Still eating waaay too much and the food is great.

In Ensenada!

Okay so this internet access is .55 cents a minute so Im makin it fast! We arrived in Mexico this AM around 7 and will be getting off ship in an hour or so. Last night we ate like pigs and played in the Casino (won $$!!). Our room is nice, the ship is beautiful however we don't think it's full. I'll have pix when I can download them and not worry about the $$$.

One More Work Day..Then Cruisin'!

I helped close the store last night with the Assistant Manager and we could'nt get the cash register to balance..argh Maybe today will be better.

Always good people watching in a mall.Met one young man from Northern Europe who is camping at Joshua Tree but headed to Washington. I told him about some good spots to visit while there but advised this isnt really the best time of year to be camping in the rain forest! Another young man with waist length hair,a skateboard and bracelets up and down each arm stopped for a cheese sample. During the course of conversation I told him I make braclets too and his response was "Oh these are for "Raves", are they the kind you make?" ( I believe a Rave is an all night dance party with electronic music and abundance of drugs)

So off to work for a few more hours and then home to finish packing for the cruise!

Living Room...so far

We still have to hide the cords coming down from the TV but we've started putting the room back together. With the 3rd couch gone there is much more room! We love the new carpet!
